A Day In My Life

June 2019

Diving the Eureka Oil Rig, eight miles off the Southern Californian coast. The struts act as an artificial reef and are covered with sea life ..notably corals, mussels and scallops.

Sometimes the sea lions will cease their barking, stir themselves, flop off their low-lying platform and join us in the water. Sometimes they won’t. Today, a few of them did, motivated by the scallop hunters dispersal of tasty remnants into the water from less than clean kills.

Boat Captains and Dive Masters alike warn of the rough conditions and strong currents, reminding everyone of the zero-tolerance policy to climbing back on board with sand in your gear … from the ocean floor … 720ft below the surface!
