London to Kathmandu 1983–4, prologue.

At eighteen years old, Israel had been a defining moment in my life, one that set the groundwork for the years of travel that followed. England contained me for almost three years before, in 1980, I headed off to New York, destination Danbee Summer Camp, Massachusetts. California was the end point where I celebrated my 22nd birthday. Seven years later I was to return, marry and live there (1987–2019).

Having left school without A-levels, University was never in the cards ..until I learned of the Mature Student Loophole, but I had to be aged 25. What to do but set off -a couple of decades late- on the former hippy trail to Nepal, on the modern equivalent of the Magic Bus. It was to be an experience that provided me with even more of the maturity factor necessary for the University Interview I had talked my way into being offered.

For brevity (relative), I’m choosing entries based on personal meaning, not always with specific dates attached.
